9 Grid - Down The Rabbit Hole

The design of this particular space is based off within the 9 Grid square. Similarly to the "9 Grid | The Bedroom" project, the nine square is used as a pedagogical tool in the introduction of interior spaces. Working within the problem, this enabled me to discover and understand the elements of interior spaces; grid, frame, post, beam, panel, center, periphery, field, edge, line, plane, volume, extension, compression, tension, shear, etc.

How I came about this particular design is through a series of conceptualisation of ideas via drawings and models, develop narratives into physical forms and design experiences through drawings, interior views and model making.

Based of Chapter 4, "The Rabbit That sends a Little Bill" in the narrative story of Alice In Wonderland, the task was to design a unique and interesting space for Alice based on my own interpretation of the chapter. Therefore, my intention was to create a space that is in line with what Alice was feeling throughout the entire space in this particular chapter, the adventure and the experience as well that she has gone through. My space’s main hiearchy would be the different alignment and positioning of the staircases shown in my space.

With that, the concept of my design firstly incorporates the dialetic factors of Openness, Enclosureness, Exteriority, Interiority and lastly, Fluidity. The theme of this creation is based of walking through an interior space whereby Alice would be surrounded by a lot of stone walls, floors and ceilings. Accompanying it will be the addition of Mazes and Dwinding staircases of different placements, portraying the general feelings of Alice in this chapter.

Overall, from this project, I have learnt to demonstrate the ability to conceptualise and plan a spatial experience utilising a narrative story, apply and translate skills in conceptual perception and expression; and the application of the creative imagination using narrative/experiences/poetics/principles to physical forms and lastly, present narrative and spatial experiences verbally and critically via models and techniques of photography, orthographic drawing, visualisations and presentation.
